A privately held company, Godfrey & Wing designs and manufactures technology to seal porosity in metal components. Godfrey & Wing systems are engineered to maximize productivity, economize sealant usage, and conserve resources for automotive and OEM companies around the world. For Godfrey & Wing, a serious approach to quality is very important, and achieving quality management systems certification is an effective way to ensure that this approach is maintained.

Godfrey & Wing was audited and certified for both ISO/TS 16949:2009 and ISO 9001:2008 by Smithers Quality Assessments (SQA) in June 2016. ISO/TS 16949:2009 emphasizes defect prevention and the reduction of waste in the supply chain, and ISO 9001:2008 is designed to ensure that organizations meet the needs of customers and stakeholders while meeting statutory and regulatory requirements.

“Certification for these standards is important on several levels,” said Dr. Jerry Feke, Corporate Quality Director, Godfrey & Wing. “TS is necessary to gain and maintain business in the automotive industry, while ISO has helped to bring our non-automotive sites into a unified quality system.”

The organization has found these certifications to have such a positive effect that it will pursue the 2015 revision of ISO-9001, and 2016 revision of TS-16949, which further ensures that quality management systems are built around meeting customer requirements. Dr. Feke emphasized that a strong, company-wide commitment to ISO/TS 16949 and ISO 9001 can ultimately determine success.

“Our quality management systems have helped us deliver better customer satisfaction, and therefore a more satisfying bottom line, since we incorporated these standards,” said Dr. Feke. “If a company commits from the top down to enacting the procedures outlined in TS 16949 and ISO 9001, it can position itself for long-term growth.”

Dr. Feke also pointed out that Godfrey & Wing’s choice of auditor played an important role in the company’s successful adoption of the standards.

“With SQA, you know you are getting an auditor with the highest degree of credentials,” added Dr. Feke. “You will walk away from a Smithers audit knowing that you have received a thorough review of your quality systems that touches on aspects that may have otherwise been overlooked.”
