Licking Memorial Hospital, a not-for-profit health care organization serving the community of Licking, Ohio, was recently ranked ninth on the 2015 list of Great Workplaces in Health Care. Licking Memorial is focused on nurturing and developing their workforce of 1,790 employees in order to provide the best quality care. The organization has a long history of quality management and received its first ISO 9000 certification from Smithers Quality Assessments (SQA) nearly 12 years ago. “Even though we have been through the certification process several times, there are always discoveries that allow us to improve,” said Robert Montagnese, president & chief executive officer of Licking Memorial Health Systems. “There is great value in getting an outside perspective on our internal practices.”

The ISO framework has made a significant impact on the quality of care delivered to patients at Licking Memorial Hospital. Employees take ownership of the care they provide and are awarded for their dedication through small perks that make a big difference. Employees describe the working environment at Licking Memorial as friendly, welcoming and open. “The support that we receive from our leadership team is liberating,” said one employee. “We are encouraged to think outside of the box and truly do what is best for our patients and their families.”

The ISO 9000 series of standards has been recognized globally as the framework for a well-managed, customer-focused quality management system. “Over the last 12 years, our SQA auditors have been dedicated to supporting our organization to better serve our community,” said Montagnese.
