Introduction to AS9101E Presented at 2015 SQA Client Conference

The AS9100 is a document of international consensus that standardizes the requirements for conducting and reporting aerospace and defense related audits. Brian Geer, manager of industrial engineering and productivity initiatives for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, presented on AS9101 changes at the 2015 SQA client conference.

AS9100 international standards were created to fill a void in the aerospace and defense industry; traditional quality management systems (QMS) did not support customer needs, and an enhanced third-party scheme was needed for quality. “Unlike ISO, this standard is developed by a working group comprised of individuals in the industry,” said Geer. “ISO 9001 didn’t support our industry’s unique customer needs, which lead to the creation of AS9000 and later international standards AS9100.”

The AS9101 Standard was revised in 2014 as a result of changes to other ISO standards, several questions stemming from current AS9101D version, and feedback from stakeholders and industry professionals. The latest changes will have little impact on the client while enhancing the process approach to auditing for certification body auditors through enhanced forms and methods for documenting the audit results.

In addition, the Objective Evidence Record (OER) is no longer required, and the Process Effectiveness Assessment Report (PEAR) will capture objective evidence of conformity (planned activities) and performance (planned results). Auditors will use PEAR to record targets, values and performance results of key performance indicators (KPI) related to the audit. To align with ISO 9000, several key definitions of AS9101 have changed, including effectiveness, planned activities and planned results.
