Sauers Tree and Landscape Service, Inc. started in 1997 as a neighborhood lawn cutting business. The company began to include snow removal in their list of services in 1999. By 2002, the small lawn service company had become a residential and commercial tree care, landscape maintenance and snow removal provider. Today, Sauers is a commercial services company with a strong commitment to proper snow removal practices as evidenced by its recent SN 9001 certification.

Adherence to SN 9001 ensures that snow contractors have the correct documentation and practices in place to protect themselves and their businesses against liability claims. The standard is important for companies looking to avoid insurance rate increases and litigation. In an effort to mitigate these risks, Sauers decided it was time to pursue certification through an audit by Smithers Quality Assessments.

“Pursuing certification benefits your business by providing best practices that keep everyone on the same page,” said Stephanie Sauers-Boyd, Co-Owner and President. “It helps you stay prepared in the unfortunate case of litigation, and it specifically helped us keep our insurance rates the same from 2015 when they were increasing across much of the industry.”

Based on the fundamentals of ISO 9001, SN 9001 is specifically designed to benefit the commercial snow and ice management industry. Potential results from certification include reduced insurance premiums, reduced losses from slip-and-fall litigation, greater customer satisfaction, more efficient use of labor and increased end-user safety and satisfaction. Sauers saw the standard as the next logical step in serving its customers.

“We achieved SN 9001 certification in 2015, and it has become a major part of our day-to-day work,” said Sauers-Boyd. “We live and breathe the standard by keeping up to date records and making sure we have the correct documents signed.”

Though the standard has bolstered the company’s operations, Sauers was not far from certification when it first decided to pursue SN 9001.

“We found that we were already about 80 percent of the way to certification,” said Sauers-Boyd. “We mostly needed to do some fine-tuning, like adding headers and footers with revision dates, to some of our documents.”

Sauers is planning for another prosperous winter as an Accredited Snow Contractors Association (ASCA) Top 100 Snow Contractor. With SN 9001 certification, the company will be more prepared than ever.
