AS9100:2016 is expected to be released in November 2016, and Smithers Quality Assessments (SQA) plans to achieve accreditation to the new standard by March 2017. This timing will give clients a period of 18 months to transition to AS9100:2016.

“We are putting ourselves on a compressed timeline for accreditation in order to give our clients as long of a transition period as we can,” said Gretchen Merriman, General Manager, North America, SQA. “Giving our clients current and accurate information regarding revisions is of the utmost importance, and the 2016 revision of AS9100 is no different.”

Beginning with audits on June 15, 2017, SQA will adopt changes for AS9100:2016, which includes updated forms and requirements. All AS9100 certificates must be transitioned to the 2016 revision by September 15, 2018, which aligns with the ISO 9001:2015 deadline. SQA is recommending that clients begin to transition their quality management system using ISO 9001:2015 requirements as the foundation for the transition to AS9100:2016.

Supplemental Rule SR003, which defines the steps certification bodies need to take to achieve accreditation and transition client certificates, will be distributed shortly after the release of AS9100:2016.

The AS9100 standard was established in 1999 to improve product quality, delivery times, labor utilization and customer satisfaction in the aerospace industry. The provisions of AS 9100:2016 have yet to be announced, but they will include improvements in the aforementioned categories.

SQA is represented at the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) and Registrations Management Committee (RMC) meetings in order to ensure the company has the most current information on the aerospace industry. SQA will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.
