Zip Tool & Die, established in 1968, has provided tool and die manufacturing, along with assembly and fabrication services, for almost 50 years. The company was built on a strong base of employees and word of mouth marketing. When Victor G. De Leon acquired the company in June 2016, he set out to overhaul the company’s marketing strategy, starting with ISO 9001 certification.

De Leon made certification to ISO 9001:2015, the newest revision of the standard, a priority right away. He saw it as a potential for growth beyond the company’s regional reach.

“I knew our employees were smart and ambitious, and it made me think about what we could do to raise our profile,” said De Leon, President of Zip Tool & Die. “We are on our way to competing with the big players in our industry with the new certification.”

The 2015 revision of ISO 9001 specifically emphasizes the organization and its context, the needs and expectations of interested parties and the process approach of the organization. Ultimately, ISO 9001:2015 was introduced to ensure that organizations have quality management systems built around meeting customer requirements. De Leon understood the importance of a quality management procedures from his previous work at Westinghouse Power Generation, Siemens and United Technologies.

“The first thing large, international companies ask suppliers is if they have ISO certification,” said De Leon. “They want to know that your process can be trusted and that if a mistake arises, it can be easily found and rectified.”

The company is so pleased with its audit from Smithers Quality Assessments and the implementation of ISO 9001 that it is already working to become AS 9100 certified for aerospace component manufacturing.

“Smithers stood above the other auditors we researched, proving that they understood what we wanted to accomplish and could tailor their feedback to our specific needs,” said De Leon. “There was nothing cookie-cutter about the service we received.”

Zip Tool & Die strengthened its marketing approach to large, international clients, limited risk factors and created a stable foundation for long-term, sustainable growth.
