As the core of the Smithers Group grew, additional expansion was still on the table heading into 2012. As detailed in Crain’s Cleveland’s article, Smithers acquired the Environmental Sciences Group from Covance Laboratories, which became part of Smithers Viscient, and Avanza Laboratories, which merged with Smithers Pharma Services to provide pharmaceutical testing services as Smithers Avanza.

In the past few years, Smithers Quality Assessments has opened new facilities in Suzhou, China, and expanded the Rapra winter test center in Michigan. Last year, the Smithers Group announced that it would be moving the North American business unit – which produces market reports, conferences and publications to a variety of clients – to Akron, Ohio, with the plan of adding at least 10 highly specialized new jobs over the next year.

What prompted these acquisitions? Each company had a great base in science, technical capabilities and reputation for quality, but each could be improved with the right help to conquer their challenges to reach new possibilities.

“We digested a lot in the last five or six years,” Michael Hochschwender, CEO of the Smithers Group told Crain’s Cleveland. “We're very happy with what we've done, and we want to make sure everything we've done is on real solid footing before we would venture into anything else. We're a conservative company by nature. ... We're very careful about what we do. We don't want to put anything we do or any of our clients at risk at any time.”
